Racine transformed Phaedra from corruptor to tragic villainess, Hyppolitus from stuffed-up misogynist to star-crossed lover, while Theseus stayed a stuffed-up jealous prick who didn't die until much later. Shakespeare suggested he sould have stayed with Hyppolita, but then the fairies did intervene then and never reappear, and Bottom (as Marx), the last laugh in the end did have.
